Project Leadership

The Project Leader is responsible for leadership of the global program development team to deliver assets on time and within budget. It will align development plans across R&D, CMC and Commercial, and partner with function heads to create and maintain a highly collaborative and positive working culture. It is a central role within the company, responsible for inspiring top-level performance across the team and being visible and accountable to the Executive Leadership Team. It is an influential position with the opportunity to positively impact the development of first-in-class treatments for those suffering from severe and life-threatening inherited disorders.


Key Elements and Responsibilities


  • Provide effective project/program leadership of the global development team to deliver high-quality projects/programs on time and within budget.
  • Inspire the team to high levels of performance and accountability
  • Work in partnership with the Functional Leads to develop and implement overall project/program strategy
  • Create a cultural environment consistent with Orchard’s core values. Encourage personal investment and excellence and nurtures commitment to common goals. Project/Program Leadership

  • Together with the Functional Leads, manage well-defined projects/programs with clear boundaries and outcomes within time and cost boundaries
  • Enable discussion/ buy-in into the decision-making process to facilitate implementation
  • Hold people to account once decision is made to ensure quick implementation
  • Manage conflict within the team objectively and by being able to influence others to be objective to resolve the conflict
  • Use organizational influence for project/program delivery
  • Negotiate effectively using simple negotiation strategies
  • Promote ideas persuasively and build on the ideas of others
  • Provide cross-functional leadership for the strategic planning of integrated development plans for programs starting at first-in-human through registration
  • Set realistic yet aggressive time-frames for achieving objectives with team buy-in and alignment
  • Align development plans across R&D, Commercial and CMC
  • Chair cross-functional project/program team meetings, ensure appropriate action plans are created and implemented. Report progress to (Program & Portfolio subcommittee of the ELT)
  • Lead cross-functional project/program team(s) to prepare Target Product Profile and global plan to deliver differentiated products leveraging the scientific and medical leadership of Functional Leads
  • Influence and input to develop individuals and team engagement on program / task
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of building and maintaining trust, and implement within the teams
  • Contribute to the portfolio strategy and ensure alignment of the program and overall portfolio strategies
  • Ensures the development and use of key projects management tools, metrics and team meeting logistics and documentation, by the team members to enhance project and program delivery
  • Work closely with the GPM on the project/program plan and budget. Accountable for both
  • Ability to facilitate discussion and decisions regarding the financial needs of the program
  • Ability to apply standard PM risk management approaches
  • Validate the technical integrity of the project/program team plan ensuring that the technical data is reviewed and discussed at the program team meeting for appropriate decision making on follow-up actions
  • Ensure program objectives, timelines, critical milestones and budgets are met by monitoring progress on all aspects of the plans. Develop and deliver appropriate contingencies and/or corrective actions, if appropriate
  • Identify and assess potential resource bottlenecks, risks to critical milestones, inefficient processes and resource variance that may require cross-functional solutions. Take accountability for ensuring any agreed changes are implemented as required
  • Organize and run workshops involving internal & external stakeholders/contributors to address specific topics including team development and deliver solutions or recommendations
  • Perform “lessons learned workshops” to identify cross functional learnings to be applied across the portfolio on an as-needed basis
  • Accountable and responsible to lead budget sessions at intervals that align with Finance budget/forecast calendar delivering and to translate board decisions to team and program budgets
  • Ensure appropriate understanding and management of team stakeholders


  • In collaboration with the Functional Leads be a spokesperson of the project/program, reporting progress, risks and issues to functional management and ELT
  • Present project/programs to the Program and Portfolio subcommittee of the ELT, Board of Directors and other management forums as needed
  • Define and implement a communication strategy / plan for the program that supports the most effective team empowerment and progress

Staff Development

  • Facilitates the success of team members
  • Work in partnership with HR Business Partner and functional managers to develop team members
  • Provide input into the performance feedback for team members
  • Act as an appropriate role model and / or coach/mentor to improve performance of individuals within the teams and the team as a whole

  • Minimum: Advanced Degree (MBA, MS, PhD)
  • English (fluent mandatory), multilingual preferred
  • Experience in project/program leadership of cross-functional teams, preferably global teams
  • Experience in Pharmaceutical/biotech industry and comprehensive knowledge of the drug development process and R&D value chain
