Discovery Preclinical

This is an opportunity for a Physician/Scientist from industry or academia to join a dynamic Research and Discovery group that is developing a portfolio of cutting-edge early stage gene therapy programmes from a fundamental laboratory setting through efficacy, safety and toxicology studies. The post will bring together a unique combination of research experience undertaken in an expert industry environment.

The individual will bring experience and expertise in gene therapy and haematopoietic stem cell therapy to the multiple aspects of Orchard. The individual will sit in the Pre-clinical and Discovery division and interact and support the work of the Pre-clinical department (led by Paul Heal) and also the R&D team based at Guy’s (Led by Piv Sagoo).

Depending on their experience/expertise, they will also engage with the business development team (BD), as we scope new scientific opportunities; provide gene therapy expertise to the clinical development teams and also to regulatory and technical ops as we progress new and existing gene therapy programmes. Depending on their scientific expertise and background, there is an opportunity for the right individual to direct a research programme within the R&D laboratory.

Requirements

Key Elements and Responsibilities

  • Provide input and report reviewing expertise on pre-clinical efficacy, toxicology and safety studies
  • Input into basic scientific discovery in the R&D lab, inc. attendance at regular laboratory meetings
  • Scientific input into new BD opportunities in multiple aspects of gene therapy inc. vector development, protein engineering, minimal conditioning, gene editing technologies, process development
  • Depending on expertise, the opportunity to direct a research programme in the R&D laboratory that is within Orchard’s overall research strategy
  • Advice and input into clinical development discussions, regulatory documents
  • Scoping of possible new programmes and opportunities in house development or partnering opportunities

Required knowledge

  • Knowledge of gene therapy preferably ex vivo HSC gene therapy
  • Knowledge of viral vector production and cell transduction processes
  • General understanding of the gene therapy field including other approaches e.g gene editing/AAV/
  • Laboratory or clinical experience in gene therapy/stem cell biology
  • Understanding of HSC biology and manipulation; any experience or knowledge of allo HSCT would be an advantage

  • Strong communicator that can drive other teams in a project setting
  • Ability to present to audiences of variable seniority
  • Ability to adapt to changing circumstances and project goals
  • Previous experience in working as a conflict resolution team member
  • Highly organized individual who is able to set clear self-objectives and team objectives

Education

  • Bachelors degree
  • PhD essential
  • MD highly desirable
  • Postdoctoral laboratory work also highly desirable
