Senior Director, European Government Affairs

Orchard Therapeutics seeks a proactive and energetic leader to manage all European-based government affairs efforts, supporting Orchard’s commitment to building strong relationships with policymakers, regulators, government staff and other relevant and influential stakeholders. This person will oversee efforts to strengthen our policy strategy and EU government advocacy and engagement activities in the fields of rare disease, gene/advanced therapies, and biotechnology. The position is based in Brussels or London and will report to the Vice President of Public Affairs & Stakeholder Engagement.

Key responsibilities:

  • Track various EU regulations and policies, inform internal stakeholders about ongoing developments and actively solicit their feedback;
  • Develop Orchard strategy and implementation plans to contribute to EU government and regulatory decisions and policies that support the company’s business objectives (in consultation with internal stakeholders);
  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with EU officials from the European Commission, European Parliament, European Council and permanent representations of the EU member states in Brussels, as well as other important stakeholders who work collaboratively with these officials;
  • Position Orchard as a thought leader in gene/advanced therapies in the EU environment in Brussels;
  • Represent Orchard’s interest in relevant EU policy debates as well as in EU and key in-market trade associations and other relevant consortia;
  • Foster strong partnerships with EU patient advocacy counterpart(s), commercial leadership, country managers, market access, legal and regulatory to ensure alignment on objectives and opportunities with regards to government affairs engagement


  • 10+ years of relevant experience
  • Thorough understanding of EU decision-making processes and institutions
  • Working knowledge of EU policies and legislation related to gene/advanced therapies, rare disease and biotechnology industry
  • Professional experience in government relations and/or public affairs in-house or at a relevant EU institution
  • A developed network of personal contacts with relevant members of EC, European Parliament, EMA, CHMP and their staffs, as well as other key third-party stakeholders with influence in the public policy arena
  • Superior presentation, education and meeting facilitation skills
  • Excellent follow-through, attention to detail and high sense of urgency
  • Flexible and able to successfully navigate ambiguity and succeed in a rapidly changing, fast-paced, deadline-driven environment with multiple priorities
  • High energy, motivated and aggressive about getting results and growing our company every day
  • Willingness to travel (30%+) mostly to European markets and our London HQ, but also occasional travel to US
